Photography & Digital Arts

The Photography & Digital Arts residency program at Flower City Arts Center prides itself on bridging art and education through community engagement. Length of residency and time of year to be mutually agreed upon. Especially seeking photographers of color.

  • 24-7 access to facilities and equipment
  • Black and white darkrooms include basic chemistry — any additional materials artist is solely responsible for supplying
  • Residency can be process and/or project oriented, unique or combined uses of materials — film, alternative/historic process and/or digital

Residency Framework

  • Residents will create a cohesive body of work in an exhibit (or public display) at the end of residency period
  • Residents will contribute to the department's blog: photo.rochesterarts.org
  • Residents have the option to participate in center-wide classes on a space available basis (responsible for materials fee, class fee is waived)
  • Residents will receive a stipend when funding is available
  • Artists are responsible for their own housing
  • Basic studio supplies are provided
  • Residents receive access to all of the facilities and technical expertise available through our staff and teaching faculty
  • International applicants welcome to apply, however FCAC is currently unable to provide sponsorship

Requirements

  • Community engagement with production of new work
  • 6 weeks up to 12 months time commitment
  • Commitment to teach and share work primarily on Saturdays and/or weeknights for 10-15 hours per week
  • Desire to teach required (teaching experience a plus)
  • Volunteer with our youth programs (TRAC, Studio 678, Studio 789) primarily Tuesday-Thursday afternoons from 3-6pm

  • Application (priority) is due April 15th for a September start date. Submissions are accepted throughout the year. Due to the volume of applications only those artists invited to participate in the residency program will be contacted. Applications will be kept on file for one year. Applicants are invited to apply for the following year.
