Law as Form, (and Why it Should be Female)

Law as Form, (and Why it Should be Female) image
Artists have traditionally explored single mediums: photography, painting, drawing, sculpture (etc.). Yet in today’s contemporary art (i.e., new genre public art, performance, social practice, relational aesthetics etc.) artists are no longer married to a single stagnant medium. Latin American performance artist and activist Tania Bruguera has the following quote on the foreground of her website “Let’s make the law useful.” By exploiting it as art. This course will explore artists who manipulate, use and bend the law or the context of the legal field to create art. A focus will be given to female artists who use law as form. Over the course of the class the students will create a collective book that outlines female use of law as form within contemporary art.
